Having now looked at the Wikipedia def'n, I now see more clearly your point. I'm a bit behind the times in computerese. Looks as though the term, avatar, has been borrowed from its traditional use (incarnation) for a contemporary use in our information age.

I see your point... perhaps the "computer user" is represented by the person being enclosed by the tanning booth-like thing (pardon my failure to provide the right terminology for that equipment) and directing the thoughts and actions of the avatar entity. Though the avatar entity is not an electronic image, perhaps the spirit of the definition is met. Thanks for your feedback. My inclusion of that definition and commentary on the movie's correspondence was more out of curiosity than of necessity to the review's intent, which was to demonstrate that the spirit of the New Age seems to be advanced in this movie. We need to be equipped to interact with this spirit and respond to it biblically, not allowing it to shape our view of the world.

FYI, I believe the Avatar they are referring to is generally fitting with the fourth definition as you have laid out. See the wikipedia article about avatars for more information.
